BENEFICIARIES

The LCGP currently supports the following charities, some of which have provided a "real life" case study below:

SBA The Solicitors' Charity

SBA The Solicitors’ Charity

SBA The Solicitors’ Charity is the benevolent fund for solicitors past and present, and their families. It has been working at the heart of the legal profession since 1858 to ensure that no solicitor is unsupported in times of need or crisis. SBA’s core purpose is to relieve the financial hardship of eligible solicitors, former solicitors and their dependants who do not have the resources to pay for the normal things in life which most people would take for granted. The charity can help eligible individuals with: • Grants & interest-free loans to help create financial breathing space in times of trouble • Funded access to bespoke advice on personal insolvency • Career, job-search & wellbeing support If you know someone who might be struggling to cope, please ask them to get in touch – SBA would like to help. Visit www.sba.org.uk, telephone 020 8675 6440 or email in confidence sec@sba.org.uk.

The Barristers' Benevolent Association

The Barristers' Benevolent Association

The BBA exists to help to past and present practising members of the bar in England and Wales, including the judiciary, and their families and dependants. The criteria are that the applicant is needy and worthy. The aim is, wherever possible, to overcome the problem and rebuild the applicant’s life and career. There is a wide range of reasons for needing help… there can be serious long-term or terminal illness, shorter health scares or accidents affecting income for weeks or months, unexpected financial problems due to circumstances beyond the beneficiary’s control, problems of old age…. Although we cannot offer specific advice our staff can point people towards those who can, particularly in cases of financial need. They are also happy to be a contact on the phone, someone to call for a reassuring chat. In appropriate cases we are able to offer financial help, - as a grant or a secured or unsecured loan. If all else fails we can help with IVAs and bankruptcies. Some beneficiaries receive regular “disregard” grants to top up their DSS benefits as well as other specific occasional help. In exceptional circumstances help has been given to enable children to remain at their chosen school if they are at a vital stage of their education and single parents have been helped with school uniforms, a new pair of shoes or a birthday treat. Special help can be given with funding a much-needed holiday break, providing a computer, paying telephone bills, mending or replacing home equipment … Every case is unique and every application is considered on its own merits and circumstances. The CILEx Benevolent Fund

The CILEx Benevolent Fund

The CILEx Benevolent Fund (“The Fund”) is a registered charity under The Charities Act, 1960. No. 295527. The Fund aims to provide relevant guidance, information and support to current and former members of CILEx in England and Wales, who find themselves in an unavoidable financial hardship. Funding is not currently received through membership of CILEx but rather the Fund relies on donations from CILEx members and branches as well as public bodies. The Fund is unique as all members, after one year of membership and regardless of their membership grade, are eligible to apply to the Fund when faced with financial hardship. In addition to current members, former members and their dependents are eligible to apply. This large beneficiary base means it is vital that the Fund continues to be a resource to those affiliated with CILEx who are facing a financial crisis. For further information on how the Fund can assist, please visit www.cilex.org.uk/membership/benevolent_fund.aspx

Help is by a one-off grant to deal with emergencies. In considering applications we take into account income, employment status, the history of the situation and other individual circumstances. Every application is considered on its merit and in deciding who will get a grant we act in a way that is fair, impartial, open and equal to all. Every application is dealt with in the strictest confidence. The Benevolent Fund relies heavily on voluntary contributions. Without the generosity of others we would not be able to offer assistance to those who need it most.
